STUDENT VISA CONDITIONS
All international students must meet three very important visa conditions in order to remain in Australia.
ATTENDANCE Students are expected to maintain 100 per cent attendance unless they are sick with a medical certificate. Medical certificates must be provided to the school within five days of the absence. The school keeps records of the attendance and notifies EQI and the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) when a students’ attendance rate falls below 80%. This can lead to the cancellation of the student visa and in this case, the student will be required to leave the country immediately.
All non-approved absences, days on which the student arrived at school late or left early, absences from compulsory sporting events or excursions, and absences due to illness, including those covered by medical certificates, are included in the attendance record.
ACADEMIC PROGRESS In addition to maintaining a high rate of attendance, students are also required to maintain satisfactory progress in all subjects studies as part of their visa conditions. The school keeps records of the achievements and notifies EQI and DIAC when a student’s achievements are not of a satisfactory standard. A failing grade in any subject may result in the student being contacted by EQI or DIAC.
ADDRESS EQI and DIAC must know the student’s whereabouts and contact details at all times while the student is in Australia. For this reason, the student must always leave a contact with their homestay if they are going out. The student must be contactable on holidays and weekends and must not change address without permission form their International Student Coordinator who will notify EQI and DIAC of any changes.
WORK PERMISSION Student Visas are granted with automatic permission to work. International student visas issued before the 28th April 2008, will not carry this automatic permission, however, students can apply for permission to work after they have started their course in Australia. Ongoing permission to work for international students enrolled in a course at a Queensland Government school will be given at the discretion of EQI and the host school. It should be remembered that say work should not negatively impact on a student's academic achievements. Students will need a Tax File Number to be able to work in Australia.
