Community Expectations

Parents expect a high standard from their secondary schools in Cairns, including high academic achievement, lots of extra-curricular activity and a supportive environment. Trinity Bay is committed to remaining a leader in Secondary Education in the Far North.

Governance

Trinity Bay High is committed to the principles of School Based Management.

The governance of the school is determined by a representative School Council. Working in partnership with the school principal the council sets and monitors the strategic direction of the school.

The school principal is accountable to both the School Council and Education Queensland for the student outcomes at the school.

Community Participation

An active Parents and Citizens Association is in operation with membership open to all community members. This has tuckshop and Performing Arts sub-committees. These fund major projects including new tuckshop facilities and the air conditioning of classrooms.

A Student Council operates and contributes to the planning process of the school. Significant leadership roles are available to students on various committees.

Large scale events hosted by the school allow parents and caregivers the opportunity to support student learning.

The Science Expo – this event like no other brings the community into the school. In 2003 over 5000 Cairns residents attended the expo. The event itself was also supported by many community groups including animal welfare groups, JCU, all emergency services agencies and local media groups.

Other events include:

- School Musicals - Sports Days
- Rock Eisteddfods - Music Nights
- Astronomy Nights - Debating

Partnerships

Queensland Health – A school nurse operates in the school for three days a week supporting individual students, vaccination programs and national health programs.

Local Church – A school chaplain is sponsored by a local church group to work on a needs basis in the school.

Queensland Police - A new initiative in 2006 was the appointment of a school based police officer at the school.

Tropical North Queensland TAFE – The school accesses a small number of facilities available at TAFE.

Local sporting associations – Sporting associations provide expert coaches to support the school’s talent identification programs.

Vocational Partnerships Group (VPG) – The school uses this agency to place students in work experience positions and for school based apprenticeships.

Business Liaison Association – This organisation is sponsored by local business and industry and provides valuable learning incentives to our students eg. The Culinary Challenge, the Business Marketing Award, Digital Expo etc.
