Learning Highlights at Trinity Bay in 2005
This year was an extremely exciting year with the school providing many fabulous opportunities for students to participate and excel.
Visual Arts Excellence Trinity Bay has lead the way in Visual Arts for a number of years in FNQ Secondary School Art. Students at the school have consistently been recognised in the annual Minister’s Excellence in Art Awards. In 2005 our students did it again with Trinity Bay achieving 6 of the 10 commendations from the Far North. Four (4) students went on to Brisbane to be awarded the Minister’s award. These awards are presented by independent artists both local and from outside the region. Individual names and schools are not shown on the works. Thus the awards are given to students on the merit of their work. Chillagoe Excursion In Term 1 Year 12 students were accompanied by local artist Kristen Tennyson on a three day journey to Chillagoe. Back at school the students refined their works on a strange but beautiful landscape. The culmination of this was the “Journeys” exhibition held in July celebrating the efforts of these young and talented artists.
Science Show Wows in 2005
In August 2005 our student scientists put on a stunning display of science excellence at the school’s Science Show. Students and staff entertained more than 600 students and parents during 3 matinees and 2 nights of science in action. The exploding hydrogen rockets, boy in a bubble, star lab and many other experiments captured the interest of the audience. Comments back from primary schools were full of praise for the school staff and students presenting at the show.
Contestants bound for Japan – Cairns Post Three schoolgirls from Cairns are proof that Cairns is leading the way in its teaching of Japanese language. Katie Tobin TBSHS, See Xiong TBSHS and Samantha Elston (St Monicas) have each won a $10000 trip to Japan to compete in an international speaking contest – after winning three of the four Australian places. All love Japanese language and impressed judges in the recent Japanese Speaking Festival, held for the first time in Cairns and sponsored by Central Queensland University and the Meikai and Asahi Universities in Japan. They beat contestants from throughout the state.
Public Speakers Scoop Awards
Legal Studies Debating Competition
At the Crowther Lecture Hall, August, 2005 the Trinity Bay team defeated Peace Lutheran and won the final of the Legal Studies Debating Competition. Our school has been a keen participant of this competition since its inception in 2000 and made the grand finals in 2000 and 2001. The decision was unanimous with our team successfully arguing that “our courts are accessible”.
Mock Court Competition
The year 11 Legal Studies students participated in a Mock Court in October, at the Cairns Court house. Our students represented the plaintiff in a negligence court case. St Mary’s College represented the defendant. Both schools prepared well for the legal case, however, at the end of the night TBSHS won with a close score.
Bond Mooting Competition
Trinity Bay was judged best in the region in 2005.
Senior Debating
Trinity Bay has always had a strong reputation in junior debating. We have constantly taken the junior trophy each year with strong competition from both state and private schools. The senior shield has eluded us for many years but no more. Prior to the June Holidays, Nada Joy Erana, Jordan Elliott and Glen Rolley took on a confident, all boy St Mary’s team and an all girls St Monica’s team in an unusual, but spirited three way debate. They clinched the Senior Rotary Debating Shield for 2005.
