Where can I find out what jobs are available? The best place to check out jobs is in the Job Guide (every Year 10 student is issued a copy mid year). You can borrow one of these from the Guidance officer. You can also access the Job Guide Online via the internet at http://jobguide.dest.gov.au/ . The Job Guide lists hundreds of jobs, what you do in this job, personal characteristics and education needed, employment opportunities and contact details.
The DEST website is a good government website that gives a lot of information, on jobs in a number of industries http://www.dest.gov.au/sectors/career_development/default.htm . This website is well worth checking out.
QUT has put it’s Destination Study on the web http://www.qut.edu.au/study/careers/graddest.jsp . Here you can find out what jobs graduates of QUT’s courses get, their percentage employment and average salary.
What are New Apprenticeships? The term New Apprenticeships refers to traditional apprenticeships such as those in Hairdressing or trades or Traineeships. Both involve a mixture of paid work and training. Training occurs on the job and may also involve off the job training at a training provider like a TAFE College. At the end of the New Apprenticeship, the individual will have achieved a Certificate in the area they are working.
Many employers will employ individuals when they finish, although this is not obligatory. Even if an individual is not employed in the same firm, having recognised training and work experience makes employment easier to obtain.
Check out the New Apprenticeships website to find out more about them http://www.workplace.gov.au/workplace/Individual/Jobseeker/Careers/NAS/ .
How can I get a job or a New Apprenticeship? The school’s Jobs Pathway Provider, Vocational Partnership Group (VPG), assists students who are over 15 who have left school or at risk of leaving school with getting into employment or training. They also help students to develop a resume and with interview skills. This is a free, Government funded service.
Individuals with a Centrelink Job Seeker Number can access Job Agencies to help them find work. Job Seeker Numbers can be obtained from Centrelink. Lists of local Job Agencies can be obtained form Centrelink.
Newspapers are still a good source of job advertisements as well as family and friends.
Increasingly, jobs are being advertised over the internet. You can check out job vacancies and if you are interested in any of them you can email your resume off to them. Most will help you put a resume together.
Below are some of these sites:
Resumes You should have a current resume to apply for a job. VPG can help you produce a resume if you are registered with them. Information on how to write a resume can be obtained from the Guidance Officer in the form of a disk which you can borrow.
